Domestic helpers in Shanghai

Domestic helpers or in Chinese often refered to as "Ayis" which literally means auntie.

Most foreign expats (and local Chinese as well) do hire part-time or full-time domestic helpers or ayis. Ayis are usually older Chinese women (often with families of their own) who clean the house, cook, buy groceries, pay the bills, look after children and run other errands.

Most ayis in ShangHai come from nearby provinces, although there has been a recent influx of Filipino domestic help. Having an ayi not only means affordable housekeeping and childcare – for many expats, it's an important Chinese interaction.

The best way to find an ayi is through friends or co-workers – one ayi often has several clients and can refer friends if she is unavailable. Announcement boards in western stores like City Supermarket or in community club houses also advertise available ayis. Most ayis do not speak English, so do some research if that's important. If you have several requirements, a relocation agency can find an appropriate match.

Domestic help agencies provide household staff trained in western cooking, English, or baby care. The rate for a part-time ayi is RMB 15-20 per hour and it's customary to give a bonus on Chinese New Year. Full-time ayis are less common.
Note: Ambassador Realty will recommend ayis if necessary and will help with any translations if they can not speak any English, this service is free of charge to our clients.

However, expats living in out of reach suburban areas sometimes rely on live-in domestic help. Many expats are now hiring live-in Filipino ayis, but when doing so it is important to check their visa status – it’s illegal to house a foreign ayi without a work permit. Some companies are willing to sponsor work permits for Filipino nannies, but without a Z visa, families can get in trouble for employing one themselves.

ShangHai Domestic helper Services

Ayis can be hired through Ayi employment agencies; however, the best way to find a suitable one is by word of mouth, recommendations from friends, other expat families, colleagues at work or local friends.
Many supermarkets have notice boards that help advertise maid agencies and also help cater to other needs that a family new to Shanghai may find helpful.
